Ilyatic Summer Blues, Part 2

Laughter Has Long Legs’ second EP finds Mike Rings straining at the limits of the insular bedroom recording, expanding his sonic palette to include jarring samples, delirious loops, frenetic percussion, and landslides of shuddering white noise. Over this racket unfurl Rings’ strong melodic sense and his otherworldly multi-tracked vocals.

The songs likewise try to escape the wood-paneled solitude of the preceding EP—songs about reinventing the self in various animal forms, about sex as a form of flight, about the new shapes into which desire can bend one’s bones. This is maximalist music, a dense and dizzying combination of musique concrète, postpunk prog, and art-damaged chamber pop that will intrigue fans of Dirty Projectors, Melt Banana, Micachu, and Animal Collective.
